Upgrade 2.3 to 2.4 - Duplicate records in tables

I upgraded from 2.80 to 3.7 and got duplicates all over the admin pages.  Apparently when I started the source code in Visual Studio, I tried connecting to the database through the setup page (I did 3 attempts).  By doing this I created 3 duplicates of many tables.  
I restored my backup copy of the database and did the upgrades again an all was well.

Upgraded from 3.80 to 3.90. I have backed up my database but a lot of duplicates on the tables like Customer Roles, Country, currency, language, etc. How to fix this? it's frustrating.
