Sorry, I do not agree with you regarding performance. This is doable and with some changes can get it to work with the best performance. If you need some assistance, PM me.

Has anyone come up with a solution? I am making the switch from Oscommerce to nopCommerce and would love to having this functionality on my site. Paying for this contribution is ok.

I have completed this functionality. All code changes (both public and admin) are 100% within the plugin, with the exception of some views that goes in the themes folder to allow for customization. Functionality includes year, make, model. Working now on extending this to add sub-model and/or engine. Functionality very similar to what you see on autopartswarehouse.com.

We can help you out. It will be custom but that will not be a problem.
We have built sites with 800,000 products and Nop is fine. We have to tune it to support the data and pay special attention to search routines but we are an Enterprise developer so this again is our bread and butter.
