Just now, if we use the products 'available' from/to dates, when the product is unavailable, it still appears like any other product in the store ( as a featured product, home page product and has it's own product page)
... the first we know that it is unavailable is if we try to buy it - we get a message 'Product is not available'
~~~
I think there should be an option to allow the store owner to choose what the logic should be when the product is unavailable eg unpublish published but don't show the buy button other suggestion ??
~~~
the ui could be changed to keep the product page less cluttered. Hide the availability date fields and have : option : 'set product availability dates ( leave blank for always available)' - this would have a check box
if checked, display the availability from / to date fields also display the 'unavailable action' options in a drop down list

Hi Hayden,
Could you please provide a complete list of placed where such "unavailable" products are still visible?
ok, when it's set to show on homepage, it appears -
i can click it and go to product page.
i can add it to compare list then view it on the compare products page (and then visit it's product page from there )
it then appears on the recently viewed products box (and we can then visit it's product page from there )
I can add it to a wishlist while it's available and still view it when it's unavailable but get a 'not available' message below the product (this is probably the message which should appear on the compare products page too - maybe the message should be 'currently unavailable' to suggest the possibility it might be available at a later date)
it appears as a related product.
and as a cross-sell product
it also appear as a bestseller on the homepage (but i think this is a good thing )
a link appears in the customers 'order' history but we definately need to keep that ____
so, this is minor issue
but I also think the other points i made about storeowner being able to decide what action to take is a good idea. eg it might only be unavailable for a little while so if a customer has added it to their compare or wishlist, it's a good idea that it stays visible there (if the storeowner so chooses)
also, the will be SEO pagevalue that might bring customers who could buy other items or view related products
