Picture size online

When I upload images using the product pages upload method, the images end up online almost twice the size of those I uploaded.  I have to use an editor like Web Expressions to recover the pictures from Thumbs and then optimize them in Photoshop, then delete them in Thumbs and upload the modified versions.  This is real - not merely apparent.  Google complains that none of my images are optimized unless I do this.  Is there something wrong with my installation?  Why do all of the variants (550, 450, 200, 100, 64, etc.) end up twice as big as they are supposed to be?
