How to transfer site from godaddy to another host

My godaddy subscription is ending and I need to move to one of the nopcommerce recommended hosting sites. The permissions and medium trust level with godaddy is not allowing me to make necessary changes or to take advantage of some of the nopcommerce options. I am a little nervous about doing this and hope someone can answer my questions.
1) What is involved in transferring the site to another host?
2) Can I just backup my current site and upload it to the new one?
Or,
3) Do I need to create a new sql database first, then upload the database info separately.
As you can tell, I am not a computer expert, but I can usually figure out what to do with clear instructions.
I have version 1.4 and would probably update to a more current version while doing this.
If so,
1) Can I install a more current version then just upload the necessary parts of my site - Like the database, etc.?

Thanks! I searched and couldn't find anything on this, probably using the wrong terms.

its really a straight forward process - but 1st, I need to ask - did you start with the source code on your local computer or did you use the auto install on godaddy ?

if you used the auto install, i guess you didn't make too many changes to the source code?

Auto-install on godaddy.

I am thinking arvixe would be a good choice for a new host.

Thanks! Now, since my install with godaddy was via their wizard, am I assuming correctly that if I move to another host that I will need to install nopcommerce from scratch - Then somehow upload my database and remake any changes I made in the modules, etc.?

I guess what I am asking is: How in the heck do I move from godaddy to another host? It can't be as simple as copying the files to the new host.

I have checked on the site and I am not coming up with a step by step process for doing this. The links I have found were dead. Videos don't help unless I have the actual process in front of me.

I just want to get it up and running as fast as possible then tweak things after. I hope I am making sense here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

What kind of changes have you made? I'm assuming that since you never had the code yourself that the changes are just "cosmetic", that is to say that they didn't change the logic in the application. I think that you can pretty much just copy the files. What I would do is install a fresh copy of nopCommerce (whatever version you're using) and once it is installed and working then you copy over the old files from your other site and the modifications should be be there, just don't copy stuff like the web.config file and you SHOULD be fine.

As for your database... does Godaddy let you backup your database into a .bak file (Arvixe does)? If so, then you can create a database at Arvixe of the same nopCommerce version and then restore the database with the .bak file. It MAY work... depends on what version of SQL Server Godaddy is using... the .bak may not be compatible with Arvixe, which runs SQL Server version 10.50.1600. Its worth a shot though.

I came here looking for answers.  A friend introduced me to the NOP download.  I had it put into a sub directory through my host, but as a newbie I have no idea what to do next.  I have lurked around trying to find the answer that I can understand and not having much luck.

When I go to the sub site it is showing the entire contents of that directory..... I dont know what to do next :-)

Can anyone help a girl out?

Thanks
