Want to take part in the development of an open source ASP.NET project?

nopCommerce is an open source e-commerce solution developed using .NET technologies. We are looking for developers who can contribute to the project. Our flourishing community is always providing us with new ideas on how we can make nopCommerce even better. Now we just need developers who can help implement them!

If you would like to take part in the development of nopCommerce, please see the requirements below:

Required skills and responsibilities:
- 3+ years experience creating web applications using C#, ASP.NET
- Proficient with object oriented design and development. Practical knowledge of design patterns.
- Very strong .NET (C#) development.
- Well versed in MVC (Razor view engine)
- Able to work independently, under general supervision and as a part of a team
- Extensive experience with the previous versions of nopCommerce

Desirable skills:
- HTML/XHTML, AJAX, Java-script
- Entity Framework (code-first)
- Familiarity with the application development lifecycle from requirements through production
- Able to communicate effectively with all team members
- Mercurial(distributed source control management tool)

nopCommerce is an open source project. As such there is no budget available for paying our Developers. So what do you get out of it?
- Recognition by the nopCommerce community and other professionals in your field
- The chance to work with a number of talented individuals on a new and exciting project
- Improve your skills and experience. Nothing does this like working on a large scale development
- The great feeling of giving something back to the development community

Unless you can actually dedicate some time (and some code) to it, don't apply.

If you have this unique blend of skills and would like to be part of nopCommerce team, please contact me via email am[at]nopCommerce[dot]com

I would love to contribute to the platform but I am finding it a bit difficult to understand the structure of the code to start making changes, etc... I am talking about the version 2.0 in MVC razor.

I know there is a learning curve but is there a developer guide document where I can start from? maybe some internal documentation that you already use would help me get familiar with the code quicker.

I want to contribute because I am planning on using NopCommerce for many clients.

Also, just to understand, how many developers are currently working on the project?

Yes. But there's a small update to requirements. Only developers who contributed a lot of source code to nopCommerce can join the team. You can create some forks on our repository site - http://nopcommerce.codeplex.com/SourceControl/list/changesets . Choose any task that you would like to implement or any part of nopCommerce that you would like to refactor. It’ll allow existing team members to evaluate your skills. If everything is fine, then you can join the team.

I/we have added and extended several features for our specific needs but I would like to make them available to integrate into the common codebase.  Although I would love to be part of the team, I'm not able to focus on enhancements which do not directly affect our needs, but I would love to contribute the things I have to do so that they can help us all out.  I have about 10+ years of .Net experience as well as a strong GUI and SOA focus.

Some of the recent customizations I've added are:
- support for jQuery image gallery (shows multiple product photos on the same page)
- support for "default" image in gallery different that product photos
- support for "default" product image pulled from "default" parent category: this gives the ability to set the image one time for all products in a specific category
- support for "syncing" product attributes for all variants across a product and/or category: example all shirts can have a default attribute set of 'color' and 'size' and any time you add a new color or size, it is synced with all other products in that category so that all shirts have sizes of Small, Medium, Large; also allows that if you add a price increase to Large, that price increase is synced across all products.  Very nice feature set when implemented properly.
- support for "shared" product attributes on one page across all product variants: for example, you can display many variants of a shirt style, each with their own "add to cart" button, but only need to have one control set for size, color, qty, etc.

Other customizations we are working on are:
- support for facebook and twitter "share" and "recommend this" links
- support for custom 'login' widget
- support for custom 'store locator' widget with Google Maps
- support for enhanced mini-cart view
- 'members only' area for secure documents / pages
- quick re-order functionality

Please let me know what the best way to contribute these kind of changes and/or if you are interested in them.

The best way is creating a new fork on CodePlex site. Please have a look at the following link: http://www.nopcommerce.com/contribute.aspx ('Contributing source code ' section)
