I suggest modifying the price display to include UOM. i.e.

$4.99 / ea
$4.99 / Pack of 4
$4.99 / carton

I suggest displaying availability date (where not blank). i.e.

Avaliable from 1/2/10
Available from 1/2/10 to 5/2/10
Available to 5/2/10

"Available" as a language parameter. Alternate text might thus be ""Avail." or "On Sale" or "Special".

I like the UOM suggestion, I'd favour a check box and UOM on the variant. I think this might have some implications for tier pricing as well.
