Filter by Category

Our customer has a need to filter products by multiple categories, i.e. when a category is selected, all subcategories will be listed with checkboxes, where one or more subcategories can be filtered.

We have tested the Ajax Filters from nop-templates.com that have exactly the filter type our customer needs, but on product attributes only.

How can we achieve this kind filter?

Even this solution doesn't allow a hierachical structure like on real categories, the customer agreed to go for it.
