customer email in french

I have a website set up in french language but for some strange reason the emails are sent from the website in dutch ! i.e order confirmations
any ideas how i change this email so it is sent in french?

Do you have multiple stores / using different templates per store?

I have one store with multiple language option. The default language is french but somehow the email templates are sent in dutch!
