Location of Master.root et. al.

I'm new to Nop Commerce for a client (more background in WooCommerce and Shopify, but trying to get a hold of this here.

Where can I find root.master and other pages to make theme edits. I can't, for the life of me, find them.

Well its a different but similar way of doing things in MVC and html5

Themes in \Presentation\Nop.Web\Themes
One theme is \DefaultClean\Content\css\styles.css default theme defined in settings

Common files like root, header, footer, columnone, columtwo are in \Presentation\Nop.Web\Views\Shared

Do I need to access that via FTP or is it available in the administration section? If the latter, I'm definitely not seeing it.

No not in Admin
You need to access the files for the website - so one method is by FTP if it is a hosted site
