Changing Pictures in Database to File System after many upgrades .. 2.8 to 3.9

I have been upgrading since about version 2.8 to now 3.9.
I am having problems with my sql allotment with my hosting provider, but have much space of disk space left.
I about 5 GB of disk space I could use and NO sql space. My sql allotment is only 1 GB and images are using 928mbs of that.

1: Is it a problem to change the images to file system with a site that has been upgraded so many times?
2: Will changing the settings from DB to File System move the pics or just change where the future pics are stored?

Should I anticipate any problems? Anybody have any advice?
