Questions about nopCommerce upgrades

I've a few questions about nopCommerce upgrades:

1) I know I can do any customization to the system (admin/front), like adding a new page, changing the logo, design styles etc. How can I do for not loosing all the customizations when upgrading nopCommerce to a newer version?

2) I need a Portuguese (Brazil) language pack. I found one but it was for a older version (1.4 or 1.5). Would it be suitable for version 1.7? And when a new upgrade arrives, how can I upgrade my custom language pack as well?
