From 1.6 to 1.9

Will I need to step the site up to 1.7 or 1.8 prior to going to 1.9?
or can I upgrade directly from 1.6 to 1.9?

Going step by step 1.6 to 1.7 then 1.8 tjen 1.9 is the best way for upgrading.

P.S. Make a backup before trying anything on your live database.

What Mike said.

You don't need to upgrade the web site files step by step, just the SQL upgrade files.

Make a backup of the database then run each upgrade SQL script in turn until you are up to date. Then install the latest files to your web site.
