ANZ

ANZ Group is an Australian financial group. Together with Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank and Westpac make up the Big Four Banks in Australia. ANZ is also the largest bank in New Zealand with its subsidiary ANZ National Bank.

The group was formed as a result of the amalgamation of three banks founded in London in the 19th century to conduct operations in Australia. Bank of Australasia was founded in 1835, and the Union Bank of Australia was created two years later. The English, Scottish, and Australian Bank began operations in 1852, 1921 it acquired two more banks operating in the region, the Commercial Bank of Tasmania and London Bank of Australia, and in 1927 the Royal Bank of Australia was merged with it.

In 1951 Bank of Australasia was merged with Union Bank of Australia under the name Australia and New Zealand Bank Limited (ANZ Bank). In 1968 he opened an office in New York and the following year in Tokyo. The modern group was formed on October 1, 1970, by the merger of ANZ Bank with English, Scottish, and Australian Bank. In 1977, the group changed jurisdiction from the UK to Australia. In 1979 the Bank of Adelaide was bought, in 1984 - Grindlays Bank, in 1989 - the postal bank of New Zealand.

In 1993, a new headquarters was opened in Melbourne, and Canadian operations that were part of Grindlays Bank were sold this year; the buyer was the Canadian branch of HSBC Bank Canada. Another British bank, Standard Chartered, bought the Asian assets of Grindlays Bank in 2000.

In 2009, the Asian subsidiaries of Royal Bank of Scotland were bought for $ 550 million, which was forced to curtail its foreign operations.
