Difference "show on homepage" and "published"

I'm translating the solution into Swedish (the XML for now, haven't come to the other things yet) and I'm having problem with the translation of "show on homepage" and "published". Actually, I'm not sure what it means at all, to me it seems to be the same thing... Either it's shown on the homepage or not. Why bother adding an "published"-option as well?

Can anyone explain to me the difference? I would really appreciate it!

It's when adding a new product the options comes up as check boxes if that's any help...

I figured it out myself... Published - show in store, Show on homepage - show on the startpage of the store... A little confusing in my opinion, but maybe it's just language difficulties :P
