We all know that effective communication is crucial since the beginning of time. A business that commutes effectively always has an edge over its competitors. For an eCommerce business that is striving to retain customers through their service, the older timer “SMS” is the best way to communicate. With a high open rate of over 98% and the lowest possible cost SMS fits the bill of all sorts of eCommerce businesses.

Excellent article. IMHO it should strongly point the fact that for this purpose SMS notifications should be used for orders notifications only, and not for promotion or advertising, which I think it is too intrussive.

Totally agree!

Just to complement and support further integration of SMS function, to share experience from current big e-commerce project in China.
Chinese e-com shoppers mainly use smartphones to shop and communicate.
Many Chinese do not even have a Email address anymore (or never use it), mobile phone number is king.
That's why we will switch our nC Shop main user identifier from E-Mail to phone number (E-mail as an option)
SMS (or In-App notification) is the most common and most accepted. (visit some Chinese Online-Shops therefore)
Usecases: registration; login; /dynamic/onetime password; reset; order confirmation; shipping notification/ tracking status...
