make category free to a certain role

I have a category that is digital downloads. I would like to make a that category free to a certain group of registered users with certain assigned role. is this possible?

Admin -> Catalog -> Categories -> Mappings
Limited to customer roles option. Is this not what your looking for?

Then create a discount "Free Download to My Special Customers" @100% assigned to your category, then add a requirement is per customer role.
