8 simple things you should avoid in your eCommerce website

1. Use too many fonts and colors for product descriptions

Just because there are many fonts and colors available doesn't mean that we need to use all of them at the same time. eCommerce website is all about a good customer experience and by including too many fonts and colors, you are just distracting the customer from your actual product description. Consistency is the key here.

2. Copy product descriptions from some other website

Even if you are selling the same products as other web-sites, never-ever copy the product description. Not only will you blacklist your website from the eyes of Google bot (they don't like duplicate content and you can't fool them), you'll also be violating copyright terms of the other website.

3. Use raw camera images for products

Don’t upload the images from your digital camera directly to your eCommerce website. High resolution images can size anywhere between 4MBs to 10MBs depending on the details. Needless to say, even 1MB image is very big for any website. It'll not only make your website slow, it'll actually be disliked by Google bot for being too heavy. Try to resize your images and optimize using various tools available. The rule of thumb is that the image size shouldn't be more than 300KBs. Smaller than this is even better.

Better use a theme that shows only relevant image sizes at appropriate place, rather than resizing images using stylesheets.

4. Display surprise pop-ups to collect email addresses or display adverts

It’s irritating obviously, but it may also force your prospect customer to close the website immediately. A single pop-up once in day is ok. But don't ever create hidden links or use javascript to generate too many pop-ups. Don't kill the overall user experience for the sake of his email address. If they like your product, they'll provide emails without forcing.

5. Use too many animations on a page

It's your eCommerce business, not a cartoon. Don't use too many animations. Not only because it makes the page loading slow, it'll also distract users from focusing on the product they are interested in.

6. Missing About Us, Contact Us, Terms, Privacy Pages

These pages are crucial and should always be included in your website. People should trust you before they can pay. Google also more likely trusts your website if you have these pages. Of course, writing here original content is important as well; even the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy shouldn't be copied from some other website due to the same SEO reasons.

7. Non-Responsive support

Without any doubts, support is a very important aspect of eCommerce. Customer is always right. Your eCommerce business should have a proper support system in place and they should treat customers with utmost respect. If you show your care, they'll definitely want to have relations with your site. So, make sure all the users’ questions are answered in time and they are completely satisfied with the answers.

8. Taking customer privacy and security for granted

Last but not the least thing is the privacy of your customers. Do you ever avoid registrations on a website because you don't see the green security lock (read SSL) on your web browser. If a person is giving you credit card information, it's your responsibility to make sure that it's protected and secure. Because nopCommerce meets all the PCI-DSS requirements, you shouldn't be worried on that front. However you should also use SSL certificates on your website to avoid MITM attacks.
