Upgrade from 2.2 -> 2.3

so, can one use TFS or Visual to upgrade from 2.2 to the latest version of NopCom? how does one upgrade from 2.2 properly to at least 2.8? is this doable without having to do it manually?

if i must do this manually, what's the best way to do this when the server is remotely accessed?
