I don't like holy wars like this one and usually ignore them. But let me write a couple of comments:
It's NOT worth it when it takes MONTHS to figure out how to put it together!
Months? As a webforms developer it took me about 3-5 days to get familiar with MVC. But of course, it can take some time to move existing webforms sites to MVC
I'm willing to bet the MAJORITY of nopCommerce users are similar to my company
We did a survey (several months before starting moving to MVC) whether people are willing nopCommerce to be moved to MVC. And the MAJORITY of nopCommerce community voted for MVC

Thats you, and its probably safe to say that majority of people that use NOP MVC are highly technical and basically want to work with bleeding edge technology.
When you are told to "skin" the application, you cant afford to "waste" time with a totally different technology. Its like telling me to program in PHP or speak Japanese. I could probably do it, but investment of time is the killer.
What we are trying to say is were probably never going to learn MVC which means were pretty much stuck with an old version with bugs.
I think its a great idea to split the forum up into MVC and WEB FORMS. The issue is the higher powers in these small companies automatically think "we must get the latest version" and therefore there is a stigma attached to 1.8 /1.9
