I currently run a live ecommerce site using an unrelated shopping cart.
I want to move this LIVE SITE to the nopcommerce 4.2 shopping cart.
However I want to prepare the new nopcommerce in the background without causing any down time to my current cart - doing it behind the scenes would enable me to work on my nopcommerce site while the live site is still running.
does nopcommerce have an option for this?
can you launch a nopcommerce site on different url and then switch it to the live url by chaning the settings.txt file?
Yes you can easily change the domain name in Administration.
The domain name is related to a store In fact with the multistore configuation you can have a number of stores running of the same domain i.e. store1.yourdomain.com and store2.yourdomain.com
One option is to setup your DNS to have the current store on www.yourdomain.com and a new test store at newstore.yourdomain.com (pointing DNS at new website ip). Then at change over turn off old site and update new store to include the www. domain name
If you have a look at the demo site you can see the configuration for stores

You should create one sample product with a sample image, in Advanced mode (toggle), and then Export it. That export should be your template. Note that the image path references the hosted server's file system. That server is where you need to put your images when you do the import. If necessary, FTP the images from your old site, and FTP them into a temporary folder in your new server. Test import with one product first... modify that exported 'template' you created - modify the picture URL to reference an image file in your temp folder.
hi there thanks for the reply this image question is relevant to this topic. as it is above the test site compared to the live site. If i ref the images on the test domain and then move to the live domain im thinking that the images will still be stuck on the test domain ! They wont move over.
Do what New York said. Setup one product with an image in Admin then export that product. Look in the export file to see the file location Us that as your template to import other products.
