what is use of giftcard activation order status ?

Can anyone tell me what is the use of GiftCard options in Global Settings ? http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/7853/giftcard.jpg

What is the use of these 2 options ?

Activation order status ?
Deactivation order status ?

How both should be set and will work ?

I am curious as well the gift card is a bit confusing. I also have read on the forum where you can only setup a gift card by purchasing one in the store itself. That does not work well at all for my model in which the admin would generate a gift card number (in the admin). In other words we don't want them readily available to be purchased on the website and I am sure others have this problem. They could then give the gift card number to one or more customers to be used on the website which would then all be tracked in the order status and reporting and deduct the amounts from the gift card just as it should.
