Temporarily changing the version in the develop branch sources

I'm currently using the develop branch of the nopCommerce. This is to have the latest sources and help the team in any way with the issues that I come across.

I came across an issue with using a third party NOP template with the latest version from the develop branch. The theme and the plugins don't show up because the third party template supports only 3.8.

What I can see in the NOP sources is that the version of nopCommerce is 3.9. Can I change the version in the sources to 3.8 temporarily to make the template to install? My assumption is that 3.9 does not have any major DB changes to cause it to fail. Has anyone tried it?
