Product Variant Attributes

Can anyone tell me how to setup and apply the same product varient/values for multiple items?

Lets say I have 20 different types of helmets, but all come in sizes XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL & XXXL. Do I really have to create one Product Attribute for Size then add the Attribute to the product and add the values for all the sizes on every product?

I cannot find a way to create the Attribute, add the values and apply to each product :(

Thanks for this, but the author has advised he done this for v1.9 and my site is 1.8. I have tested and it doesn't seem to work on 1.8. Not without some modification to the files anyway.
