2.2 Theme error with _Root view

I'm creating a custom theme and am trying to override some of the views by placing them on my Themes\ThemeName\Views folder but when I replace the _Root.cshtml my sit only shows a page full of random characters (���`I�%&/m�{J�J��t��`).  

The other views work fine, I just run into trouble with _Root.

Any ideas?

I would love to have answer to this as well. it would be great if it could just show the error instead of binary error text like above.
