Remove Categories feature completely

I have version 1.6, I don't want to use the categories feature at all, take it out, hide it, whatever.  
I didn't add any categories, I didn't add anything , the categories section still show up in my website.

Can someone help me?

Check the master page(s). Remove all references to the categorybox. I think its called CategoryNavigation.ascx. I might be wrong about the name but I’m sure you will find it
