In v1.5. You need to log into admin> global settings > other and change the default number to the number you want. Depending on the number of prdoucts to display, you might need to modify the width of the layout in stylesheet. Hope that helps.
open up a category, look on the SEO tab you will see 'page size' the number you enter here determines the amount of products displayed per page in that category
