Display subset of categories on homepage

Is there way to handpick a list of categories I would like to show on homepage main body?

not without either coding it on to the main page or making links in the homePageText topic

a nice feature on 'Edit category details ' page would be a 'display on home page' checkbox ( the same as we have on the edit product page)

sure we have the global 'Show on the main page:' option on the manage categories page but adding the individual option would allow for quick alterations to the home page
