gender support in the email template (sent to customers)

How do I request the gender in the email template sent to a customer to create the correct form of address? This is specially useful for other languages.

i.e. "Dear Mr. XZY"  or  "Dear Mrs. ABC"
For German: "Sehr geehrter Herr XYZ",  or "Sehr geehrte Frau ABC"

Are there any plugins or workarounds?

Gender is not a built-in token.  It would need customization.  
I'm not aware of any plugins or workarounds.
