That's a shame. webp is a good idea to speed up the site, but not all browsers support webp. Uploading the jpeg would be a good time to duplicate the image as a webp and show whichever the browser supports.

I advise you to upload jpeg/png and using this plugin.
If the customer uses the old browser he will see jpeg/png, if he uses the new browser he will see webp pictures.

We added support AVIF format.
AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) is an encoding based on the open source AV1 video codec. AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) is an encoding based on the open source AV1 video codec. AVIF is even newer—than WebP.

Examples for the default banner form nopcommerce:
