Is there a way to change the drop down to images instead of letters in language selection drop down .... thanks

It requires a bit of customization. You'll need to modify \NopCommerceStore\Modules\LanguageSelector.ascx user control

I don't find this in Configuration/Global Settings (nop 1.9).
Where is exactly?

But it isn't possibile to see not only flag but also the names of languages?

Go To
Settings ->General Settings ->Select Advanced-> You will get Use images for language selection Field-> select that checkbox
