Custom category attribute

is there a way to add custom attribute/field to category?

I need each category to have special unique numeric ID (custom provided) besides just category name. And I need to display ID and Name in the left menu when generating list of categories.

this may seem a light response, but can you not rename your categories with a number before the name?

ie
my first category
my second category

would be

1 my first category
2 my second category

I thought about it. But it sounds like hack and besides it has many potential issues. Is there way to add custom field to category?

Any other suggestions besides pre-pending category Id to the name of category?

I agree with the OP on this one... there are many cases when it would be better to add an Attribute to the Category, rather than adding it to every Product in the Category. From the Attributes video... ALL computers (which is a Category) will have RAM and CPU attributes. The Products linked to the Category would inherit all of the Attributes of the Category.
