google is supposed to start showing a "mobile friendly" tag next to sites that are...mobile friendly. This tool tests this for your site:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly

I'm noticing that my http://www.deadlywind.com site is failing this test, even though it has the separate mobile-specific version of the site live.

Any ideas why it would be failing this? Maybe the user agent sniffing used with 51 degrees is not detecting the "mobile" google bot?

We wrote a blog post about this new Google feature.

I actually saw that article linked from linkedin ;)

Does this tool basically tell us that google requires responsive design now?

It works fine for default nopCommerce design (test it here).

You can test your site here. This page has some recommendations for you

Andrei, the new default theme is responsive, whereas the older one I'm running has the separate mobile theme. So this helps comfirm that google is only recognizing responsive themes as mobile friendly and not the separate theme/jqm versions. This is frustrating...

Hmm I think it makes sense, as responsive versions are one of the best ways to view on mobile...

Actually, it doesn't make any sense at all.

The standard mobile theme i can easily adjust and usability is just as good as responsive.

Why would it matter what technique i use to achieve the same results and i dont kill any furry animals in the process?

Google sucks

It doesn't matter really. The whole thing is so Google can make more money on mobile ads. They said it themselves in the Google FAQ.

Agree with you. It does not make any sense.
Can you server the mobile version of the site when google is browsing? For that I think you need to set some value in a DB table. Let us know if you find any fix.

Hi

I currently installed version 3.1 using the default nopcommerce theme and I've activated
the default moblie theme.

Browsing my website with an iPhone shows the mobile theme.
But testing my site under https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/
shows the Browser theme and this one isn't mobile friendly.

I've also activated https but this seems not to be the problem.

However it ssems that googles request  sn't detected as a request from a mobile device.

Thanks for support
