Is there a configuration option where you can specify an alternate / specific layout template for a product or category? I've looked in the settings but can't find a way of doing this. Has anyone achieved something similar to this?
For example.....
If I was selling artwork, I might want a template that had a full-width product image at the head of the page, and a column of smaller images below, adjacent to a brief product description.
In the same store, but different category, I might also sell books and that template might want the full description to be an excerpt of chapter 1 and thus the whole page laid out completely differently to the artwork template.

Yes, this is possible with Product Template. If you check Product edit screen, you will find a field to select a template. You can include multiple templates from a theme and later on can select it from Product / category edit. You need to define template here as well.

Thanks @nopAccelerate, I was pretty sure this was possible, but hadn't found the "System \ Templates \ Product Templates" menu, so was thinking that the Simple / Grouped options were two hard-coded choices.
I see now they're configurable to do what I want. Many thanks for the pointer!
