Webp logo image upload fails. Uptown 4.2

I am not able to upload webp formatted image in the Uptown Theme Settings  (4.2). Is this expected behaviour or should I be doing something different.

(The reason is Google Page Insights warning us to move to next gen image formats)

Additional note; same error is thrown with product images and other suggested next gen image formats suggested by Google PageSpeed Insights: JPEG 2000, JPEG XR.
