Meta desc on each page

I may just be overlooking this, was the meta description for each page changed to allow customization? I have google complaining that almost all my pages have the same meta description on them. Im still running 1.7.

and apparently the title tags too.

you can change the names at product level (seo tab) , or you can create default settings for these in global settings

if i recall correctly, leaving the fields blank throws also throws up a default
