Here is something I figured out just now that might be helpful for some people...
If you are using port 25 but trying to test on your local machine, your ISP may be blocking port 25. Try using port 8889 instead (or check with your mail provider to find out if they have some other alternate port for you to use) when testing locally. I just spent forever trying to figure out what is wrong and that fixed it for me (my host is MyASP.Net, which I'm not affiliated with in any way).

I completely agree with you mayabellescloset, Same error we have but after changing port to 8889 our issue fixed. When we investigated for this issue we find that many ISPs have blocked port 25. So it causes this error.
I just upgraded from 3.2 to 3.4 my gmail smtp setting work fine in my live 3.2 version however they time out in 3.4 with the exact same settings as 3.2.
