Dabs style filtering

I want to add Dabs style filtering to my manufacturer & category pages. See "Refine your search" section in:

Can someone point me in the right direction on implementing something like this (I'm a fully fledged .Net 3.5 developer btw).

I've not found much documentation regarding extensibility so an overview of how to add custom behaviour would be nice. What are the basic proceudres for implementing and integrating something like this?
