VATnumber for anonymous customer

I am wondering if it is possible for an anonymous customer to enter a VATnumber? I cannot get this done, am I missing something? I have followed

But I do not get a VAT field anywhere in the checkout process. I can see there is an automaticly made a "Guest" account which has the VATnumber field as any normal user account. If this is not natively supported, is it advisable to add this field to the shipping/invoice form?

This is not possible, since the anonymous customer does not have the 'My Account' page. And this is where the VAT number is entered.

If you really need a VAT number, you might add a checkout attribute that asks for a VAT number, but that is just a work around since the VAT number is then only entered as text and does not have any functionality regarding VAT.
