Basic questions on the preferred method of extending data models in nop 2.x

What is the correct way to extend the data models in nop 2.x, do I add the additional columns myself or just extend an model in Nop.Admin / Nop.Web. Sorry for the beginner question but I only have a few MVC projects under my belt.
