enable SSL will not make email work

Hi,
after I selected "Enable SSL" option in Email accounts configuration, the email will not work. I have purchased non-shared SSL certificate from my hosting co.
Can anybody help to make it work? If I did not select "Enable SSL" option, are there security issues in my email account?
