Help with the 2.6 upgrade

My store is closed at the moment, but I am trying to upgrade from 2.5 to 2.6.  I ran the upgrade, but I'm sure I did not do something right because I was not able to get into my store.  I kept getting an error.  I restored back to the old version so I could keep working on it.

I'm some what new at this so if someone could give me simple step by step (laymen terms) on how to upgrade to 2.6 would be greatly appreciated.  - Thank you in advance.

I'm using Arvixe as a host if that helps any.

It may help to post the actual error your getting.  See this post to change from generic error message to specific error.
