Go to admin area > general and misc settings > security settings. Enable CAPTCHA, configure it (public/private keys) and ensure that "Show on login page" is checked

Hi mate,
we are using version 1.9 and do not have the general and misc options?
its a online shop site. so we have
dashboard | catalog | sales | customers | promotions | content management | configuration | system | help

is this still possible to do this?

Have a look at Admin area > Configuration > Global Settings > Security tab. It should be there
