I would have thought adding a button to link to a Facebook page, and twitter would be easy and built into nop commerce (I am using 1.9).
Is it not?  Do I need a plug in?  or do I ned code it in?
Where do I start?

You can always code it in yourself. You would have to download the appropriate file where you want to display it though.
