Has MEF been considered for plug-ins? If so, is it not suitable? Can it be used instead of a custom plug-in architecture?

Yes

It was one of the case, but we decided to have our own implementation

Why? Does it have any certain advantages? What's wrong with current implementation?

The big advantage of MEF is that it is part of the .NET framework.
It is well understood, tested and documented. It is designed to
address the extensibility problem, it is also a general solution
and not specific to nop. By using MEF we can make more parts
of nop extensible in a standard way
