Products Serial Number

Hi,

I am trying to automate return serial number Products that are purchased.

My requirements are like

1. I have the web service return the serial number.
2. When order paid i will generate serial number and  attach to customer profile same download product.

Please tell me that. Am I following a correct approach or not?

Any comments will definitely help me in achieving this.
