How can I set the number of products displayed on a page?

Is there an area in the Admin section for setting the number of products displayed on a page? If not, is there a file that can be edited? I'm using version 1.4. Right now I'm displaying 3 product across and given the size of the grid, I'd like to limit the number of product per page to 9. I read in a post from January of 2009 that this would be added in the next version. I'm dealing with categories that contain 40 to 60 products each. Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated. look in admin

catalog-->categories

choose a category    on the second tab, 'seo'  there is an option   'page size' - the numeric value is the amount of category products displayed per page

as you have set  your cart to display 3 across, i suggest you keep the page size value a multiple of 3
