Customization of Themes and Appearance

Does the book thoroughly describe what files/locations  to edit and how/where to make visual customizations (html/css/images/database settings, etc.)  Also, is it well documented on how to create new themes?

If not, is there any documentations of these issues available?

What is the best practice for extending NopCommerce?

How do we dramatically update the HomePage?

Should we use Themes and Topics,
or should we create new aspx pages and replace the existing NopCommerce pages?

Replacing pages makes it a bit difficult to upgrade to the next version though!
