Track Inventory By product attributes

Hi,
Would it be possible to reduce the options in the dropdown on the product page to only available items ?

In the example of a T-shirt with the XL-L-M-S combinations and only L has a stcok quantity > 0,
the dropdown on the product page would only show the L option.
Otherwise customers have to select the size, only to see a text saying it's not available.

I would like to take it even further and allow customers to filter the whole category, so they only see
items available in their size.

Just found out this was already requested/suggested in 2014, but still didn't make it to be in the 3.8 release

Could anyone explain why we are still missing this feature ?
Magento does this out of the box, and I think reducing unnecessary clicks is still very important.
