Adding an alternative shopping cart to the Header

Hi All,

I am creating a new instance of the shopping cart, albeit with a slightly different purpose.  I understand I need to create a plugin for the actual instance.  What I don't know how to approach is changing the header view without actually changing the source code.  What is the recommended approach, so I don't end up in carnage when I upgrade at a later point.

the easiest way is to create a widget and add it to the header using "header" widget zone.
